The Cost of Obesity in the USA in 2013 Keeps Rising

NBC Poll: 94% SAY, "Bring Back PE! Exercise Should Be Core Class"

NBC Poll: 94% SAY, "Bring Back PE! Exercise Should Be Core Class"

SILVER SPRING, MD – May 27, 2013 – In a recent NBC online poll, more than 13,000 Americans voted on the following question: “Should exercise be a daily ‘core’ subject for students in all grades?”  The overwhelming NIHanswer by 94% of the respondents was, “YES, bring PE back for all students.  It is important for health and learning.”  This survey was part of an NBC News article sighting research from the Institute of Medicine, which concluded, “Children need a full hour of exercise in schools every day, and not just in physical education classes.”

With 48% of all high schools having no physical education (P.E.) and the average school budget for P.E. at $764 per year, this is a long overdue reversal of the roll of physical education as part of the school curriculum. Jim Baugh, Founder of PHIT America and one of the original architects of the Physical Education Program (PEP) 13 years ago, is excited to see this survey. “Americans are finally realizing the importance of physical education and how important 94%P.E. is to fighting the obesity and sedentary crisis. And, just as important, Americans are seeing that P.E., physical activity and sport will help children pay attention in the classroom and improve academic results. We list all the multiple benefits of physical education on our this web page. Within the next two weeks, PHIT America will be showcasing four studies from around the U.S. which shows increased activity results in definitive increases in academic achievement. Our school and community leaders have to wake up as they have forgotten that we need a healthy body for a healthy mind.”

Other Research – PE Helps Overcomes the Inactivity Crisis

The new findings also support research by the Physical Activity Council (PAC) that shows physical education will overcome the inactivity crisis. In PAC research, 16% of children who have P.E. in school are inactive outside of school. However, 41% of children who do not have P.E. are inactive or totally sedentary outside of school.  The PAC survey is based on interviews with more than 41,000 Americans PE Sedentaryeach year, focusing on their participation in more than 100 different activities in the prior year as well as if they had PE when they were in school.
“If we want to fix the obesity and sedentary crisis, we should do exactly what the NBC poll says, put physical education back in school.  It is a crime what has happened to our kids. P.E. is the grassroots program that is the foundation all activity in America. And, we now know that it helps children do better in academics as well,” continued Baugh.

Our U.S. Government Can Help – Continue To Fund and Support PEP

Did you know the only funding for P.E. in the entire U.S. Department of Education budget is the Physical Education Program (PEP) at $78 million per year?  And this amount is less than ¼ of 1% of the entire U.S. Department of Education budget!  PEP is a 12-year grant program that supports P.E. programs throughout our country. But, every year, this legislation is threatened or not included in the original federal budget. “This program is vital to the health of our children and country.

It Is Easy For You To Help - ADVOCATE NOW

All of us must contact their legislators to tell them to support and fund PEP,” said Baugh.  “PHIT America has made this easy. When someone visits, all you have to do is click on ‘Advocate’ and there is a simple online tool to email your Members of Congress to show your support of PEP.”
