WE ARE GOLF Coalition in Washington, D.C. Supporting the PEP Program & the PHIT Act

Washington, D.C. -- April 16, 2013 – It’s National Golf Day on Capitol Hill.  More than 100 leaders from golf companies and organizations, representing WE ARE GOLF, are in Washington, D.C. today talking with Members of We Are GolfCongress about the many values of golf.  Among the topics being discussed are golf’s profound economic and charitable impact on communities; the sport’s commitment to environmental sustainability; its work with and support of wounded warriors; and its key role as a driver of improved health and wellness for Americans.

One of the key priorities of the day is to ask Members of Congress to promote a more active and fit America through two pieces of legislation, the Physical Education Program (PEP) and the Personal Health Investment Today Act (PHIT).  Steve Mona, CEO of the World Golf Foundation, attended National Golf Day where he pointed out the significance of PEP and PHIT.

“We need to create a more fit and healthy America,” said Mona.  “While golf is a great physical and mental workout, WE ARE GOLF realizes we must support programs and legislation that will get more Americans active and fit -- more often. Both PEP and the PHIT Act will do this. “

The PHIT Act would enable Americans to use pre-tax medical accounts for physical activity expenses. It will create an incentive for Americans to become more active and playing more sports. The 12-year-old PEP Program supports physical education programs through grants from the U.S. Department of Education to school districts throughout the USA. Research shows children who have PE are 3-4 times more likely to be active outside of school. Passage of PEP and PHIT will help the U.S. fight the obesity and sedentary crisis in America.

Jim Baugh, an attendee at National Golf Day and Founder of PHIT America, a national cause focused on overcoming the obesity and sedentary crisis in America, explains golf’s message as it relates to PHIT and PEP.

“It is so great what golf is doing. Americans can be active and fit in golf for a lifetime,” said Baugh.  “And now, WE ARE GOLF’s support of PEP and PHIT will give more Americans a chance to be active and fit in all activities. And, we will help prevent some of the soaring health care costs. Americans can support what WE ARE GOLF is doing and these two pieces of legislation by clicking the red Advocate bar on this page. It is an easy 1, 2, 3 process. Send your message to Congress supporting PEP and PHIT.”

WE ARE GOLF is a coalition -- led by the Club Managers Association of America, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association, and The PGA of America -- formed to tell the true story of golf. Not just the game, but the stories of the hardworking men and women who make it the greatest sport in the world and whose livelihoods depend on it. It is these accounts that affirm the continued health and growth of the golf industry is vital to the thousands of communities across the country and is instrumental in enhancing the lives of millions of Americans.
